VERSE FOR TODAY: God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God (Psalm 53:2).
HYMN FOE TODAY: "As with Gladness Men of Old"
The ancient philophers failed to be wise because they only used human understanding and did not use their trade to look for God. Truly wise persons, however, will seek the Lord.
Wise men, called Magi, came from East looking for the nex-born Messiah. Attempts have been made to show that they came from Arabia or Yemen, because the gifts they brought are produced in those areas. But Magi were priests of the Zoroastrian religion. As such they were confused and mixed up in a lot if areas. But they were right about one thing; they knew a Savior was coming into the world, and when they saw His star they went looking for Him.
Wise men today still seek Him. The wise men of Greece were philosophers; that is lovers of wisdom. What we need to be is lovers of God. For if we love God, we are wise.
The ancient scholars tried to understand the world of the senses. But the truly wise know that (1) the world, the universe, and mankind were all ceatedby a divine Beingqnd (2) that it is worthwhile seeking to know this Being who lies behind the visible order. "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John17:3).
PRAYER THOUGHTS: Dear heavenly Father, help us to seek wisdom, for in seeking wisdom, we seek you. Thank You that You want to be sought, and that You have promised to be found in the name of Jesus, our savior, we pray. Amen.
