The desire of the righteous should be compared to the expectation of the wicked. As with many of Solomon proverbs, the parallelism between the two clauses shed light on both of them. The wicked do not actively, and consciously expect wrath; they rather expect to realize their dreams and live the good life. Therefore, the desire of the effect, the end result, or conclusion to their lives.
This use words is called metonymy, a common figure of speech where a related word is substituted to add beauty and force, and in the case of proverb to create intrigue. Desire here is a metonym for the effect, future, or result of a righteous man's life. Expectation here is a metonym for the effect, future, or result of a wicked man's life.
A righteous man desires good things for others and himself that the wicked cannot even know, but the lesson is not how men desire different things, the lesson is what righteous men receive contrasted to what wicked men receive. A righteous man desires a blessed life, and he gets it. The wicked man desired a blessed life, but he gets judgment instead.
Solomon's described the expectation of the wicked elsewhere." when a wicked man death, his expectation shall perish and the hope of unjust men perished (Pr.11:7). "the hope of the righteous shall be gladness; but the expectation of the wicked shall perished (Pr. 10:28). The future of the righteous is blessed; the future of the wicked is curse.
A righteous man delight himself in the Lord, and God give him the desires of his heart (Ps. 37:4). He walk, uprightly zealously doing the will of God at all times, and God does not withhold any good thing from him (Ps. 84:11). He lives Godly life, desiring and trusting God to have mercy on Him and bless his efforts, God and men favor the cause if such men, and they reap results that are only good in this life and the next.
A wicked man thinks he will live indefinitely, and he pursues his goals without regard for God. Confident in himself and the world's vain promises. He is shocked with the troubles he endures in life, and then he dies to find his expectations turned upside down. He cannot take anything with him, and he finds God angry with him for eternity (Rev.20:11-15). This is a terrible outcome, but it is what he chose by living a selfish, sinful lifestyle.
What is our future now? How will things end for you and each family? Do you want a glimpse into these days ahead? The Proverb is true, count on it, expect it. A righteous man will realize only good as the end result of all his desires, for both God and man's will favor and reward him. But the wicked man, no matter what he desires, will be judged in wrath.

Hi ya'll! Tonya had a rough night with a little one, so I'm filling in for her.
I dont mean to be irreverent here, as i type that title above the post.. I'm wondering if some of us were thinking that, when we read this verse Proverb 11:23 sayest.. "The desire of the righteous is only good, but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
Does that mean that if we have a thought or desire pop up into our head that isn't "good" that we're not righteous? Wow, if that were the case, that sends a shudder up my spine; how about you?
That is not what Solomon is saying here, though. Let's take this verse apart, like a mechanic working on a car, and then see if we can put it back together, shall we? (and we'll cross our finger that we have no part left over when we're done!.. I just hate it when that happen when we are repairing our vehicle. yeah! Ahem, i digress, alright, the part that is bothering us is the part that says, "only good," right? But if we back up to "desire" it is actually a hebrew word meaning "delight" that the key! Do we delight in the good things that happen to those around us? Do we desire that those around us have the good, the pleasant in life? Are we wishing for to anyone or are we delighted when God shows mercy and favor to others. I think we are on the right track here, because the root of the word "good" in the verse has these meanings; better, bountiful, ease, merry joyful, pleasant, and more.
Turn over the coin, the delight or expectation of the wicked? The wicked want God to move and force their passion and revenge on others to even remove those that are an obstacle that other people have, and they desire that those folks should have even more troubles.
Let's keep this verse in our hearts this weekend:, may even put it on card on the fridge?
(Psalm 37:4). "Delight thyself also in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desire of thine heart
Let's try desire the best for other.. Let's strive to be like the righteous, not the wicked. But have the mind of Christ Jesus!
