THE FINAL WORD

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:16-20
VERSE FOR TODAY: Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" Matthew 28:18, New International Version).
HYMN FOR TODAY: "A Charge to Keep I Have"

Sometimes the last words spoken by a person before he or she dies can be very important. There are challenging statements such as, "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country." However, there are also those who realize too late that the things they have based their lives on have been meaningless.
The final words that Matthew records from Jesus are important for many reasons. First, they are important for what they are responding to: both to worship and to doubt. What can possibly be appropriate for both of those? Jesus's words are. Also, His last words are important because they represent the culmination of all that He said and did during His time on earth. He spoke consistently about who He is and what He was sent to do, and now He made clear that both has reached their completed form.
Perhaps most importantly for us, His last words important because they give purpose to the lives of people throughout all time since that day. We have a task to accomplish for Him, and He has the authority to assign it to us. Do you recognize His authority? Have you accepted His mission?

PRAYER THOUGHTS: Our Reigning King, we yield all of ourselves fully to you, knowing that You have authority over every aspect of our lives and our world. Help us to bring others to the same commitment to Your will. Amen
