THE SUSTAINING SPIRIT

SCRIPTURE: Roman 8:18-27
VERSE FOR TODAY: In the same way, the Spirit help us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express (Roman 8:26, New International Version).
HYMN FOR TODAY: "Holy Spirits, Faithful Guide"

Air, water, and food are basic necessities. Without them we could not survive for long. In the proper balance these elements provide quality of life.
Jesus knew that His disciples would not survive long without the sustaining Spirit. When the time of His death was near, He called His disciples together and told them that He was leaving them. Jesus promised that althought He was leaving, the disciples would not be left alone. He said to them, "And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter the Spirit of truth (John14:26); Read verse 26 to see that the Spirit of truth is the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit came, as promised, on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). The book of Acts is replete with accounts of the  Holy Spirit's ministry. Paul, in today's text, remind us that we have the first fruit of the Spirit. Elsewhere the apostle refers to the "earnest of the Spirit." The truth revealed is that we Christian's have the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide and sustain us in our spiritual journey. The Spirit helps us when we are weak and assist us in our prayer life. This is God's will for us so that we can have a divine quality to our life.

PRAYER THOUGHTS: Father, I pray with the assurance that You hear and understand. When I am weak, You make me strong. When I am lost for words, the Spirit intercedes on my behalf. Grateful, O God, am I for the gift of salvation through Jesus. Amen.
